If someone with dementia is suffering with problems with sight, oral health, hearing or speech, it can really reduce their wellbeing.
It can really make them feel more distressed and confused. So it is important they they have help and support available to them to help sort the problems out.
The person may not be able to let someone know that they are suffering form one of the above. So care should be taken if you notice anything change within that person.
If they are a little more withdrawn than normal or if their body language is very closed it may be that they are in distress and they can not communicate this.
It is important for carers to make sure that these areas are checked regularly. If you do notice a problem then contact your local GP right away and they will be able to provide you with the contact information for a local specialist.
Professionals working within these areas include; Audiologists, Optometrists. Speech and Language Therapists, Music therapists, Dietitians, Dentists and Continence advisers.
These professionals are here to help. Unfortunately we can not give you advice as to which of these specialist will be available in your area, as all areas of the country are different. It is worth speaking with your GP to find out where these local professionals are.
The help and support your loved one needs is always available to them. You can also contact your local social services who should have a list of contacts that you can use to get your loved one the help and support that they need.
