Support for Dementia from a Nurse

There are a few different type of nurses that will be involved in your care and support. A nurse can help if you are suffering with dementia and living at home or are in a care home. The nurses are there to help you manage and provide professional advice and support to carers when they need it.

District nurses or community nurses are members of the primary care team. They have had extra training to provide advice and care for people at home and in care homes. They can also carry out various tests and assessments.

They are there to provide you with help with various things including;

  • giving injections
  • taking medication
  • cleaning and dressing wounds
  • checking blood pressure

You can contact a district nurse through your GP. If you are worried about your mental health then you can mention this to the district nurse and they can advise you as to what actions to take.

Practise nurses work with GP's and other community nurses. They carry out a range of nursing activities within a GP practise. If you have ever had a flu jab, a blood test or check up at your local doctors surgery then it was most likely given to you by a practise nurse.

Practise nurses can also advice on things such as:

  • maintaining a healthy weight
  • stopping smoking
  • controlling blood pressure

You can get in contact with the practise nurse at your local GP surgery.

The other nurses that are available to support you are; community mental health nurses, admiral nurses and community palliative care nurses.
